Yields of Deciduous Tree Fruits as affected by Irrigations in Droughty Season

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to examine the effect of irrigation on fruit yields and quality in deciduous tree fruits in Suweon, Korea in 1978. The cultivars used were 7 year-old Starkrimson and Spur Golden Delicious apple on YAE SAN loamy soil and, 10 year-old Chojuro and Niitaka pears on HWANRYOUNG sandy loam soil. The irrigated soil moisture under tree canopy was adjusted to pF 1.5¡2.5 from the stage of fruit cell division to harvesting time. The experimental design was replicated three times with randomized complete design. The results are as follows.
1. Irrigation had little influence on trunk girth, tree height, tree spread and shoot elongation, though tree growths tended to be better when irrigated than in the control.
2. Fruit weight and yields were significantly increased by irrigation: yield increase of 35.3% in Starkrimson apples; 36.2% in Spur Golden Delicious apples; 7.5% in Chojuro pears; 21.7% in Niitaka pears.
3. Soluble solids and total acid of fruit were not affected by irrigation.
